Irwin Wong - Photographer

Welcome to my blog.

If you don't already know me, my name is Irwin Wong, and I'm an editorial photographer based in Tokyo, Japan.  I'm also affiliated with Japanorama.co.uk - the fastest growing source English-language source for learning photography in Tokyo - where I teach a series of lighting workshops.

This blog showcases some of my recent work, as well as photos from the workshops and classes I teach.  Hope you enjoy it, and you can always find more of my photos at my homepage here.

Pimp my CEO

Last week had to shoot some portraits of MTV Japan’s newest CEO. This man will be at the forefront of bringing out such shows like Pimp My Shinkansen, Tokyo’s Best Kabuki Crew, Takeshi and Butt-head, The Roppongi Hills, and so on.  (Hah, The Roppongi Hills, good one Irwin). Sometimes I think I need a better...

Fred Harris

Fred Harris – artiste extraordinaire, humanitarian and philanthropist. This is as shot, no alterations in post except a little sharpening for web.  Forgive the negative space at the top – the magazine’s title is likely to go there so I decided to leave it in.  Strobe freaks: check out the video I did here for...

Photography Tip #1504 – Get drunk first

It’s incredibly important not to take this caper too seriously – sometimes it’s useful just to have a few drinks to loosen up and have a bit of fun.   All shots below were made with a D700, 24-70mm f/2.8, a bit of flash and a bottle of Remy Martin.  You can see the dangers...

3 lights, 1 chair

Behold veteran journalist and media personality Torigoe Shuntaro. Marissa @ abandoned train yard

Some shots from the weekend. Sorry for the late update guys, but things have been getting busier. This is Marissa – and as is fairly evident she does a great job modeling. The location was the industrial complex at Ougimachi, where there was an excellent section of unused train track for shooting. At least, we...

These guys bend differently

Big thank you to Capoeira practitioners P-Jay and Shingo for the weekend’s workshop.  Definitely one of the more challenging workshops by far, as we had to deal with using flash to freeze motion as well as timing shutter releases to get a decent photo, not to mention auto-focus issues and our subjects moving all over...

Just a couple from the weekend

Big thanks to all who attended the session on Sunday!  As is always the case it’s the models and the students who provide the most creative energy, with me just sitting around in the background fiddling with lights.  Occasionally I do get to take the odd shot though, and here’s a couple from the workshop....

Just one for now…

Sorry about the infrequent-ness of posts – been pretty slammed with stuff going on with shooting, sorting out a visa, etc. Busy, but good. Here’s just one shot from the session we had with Johan and Akiko on the weekend at Odaiba. More will come as soon as I can spare the time to go...

Akiko

Some shots from the most recent weekend workshop – Akiko was simply incredible and just looked great no matter what we threw at her.  Here are the demonstration photos I shot to show the class what I was talking about; she absolutely killed it.  Check out her flickr page for more images of this great...
