Editorial, Wedding and Commercial Tokyo Photographer – Irwin Wong bio picture

Irwin Wong - Photographer

Welcome to my blog.

If you don't already know me, my name is Irwin Wong, and I'm an editorial photographer based in Tokyo, Japan.  I'm also affiliated with Japanorama.co.uk - the fastest growing source English-language source for learning photography in Tokyo - where I teach a series of lighting workshops.

This blog showcases some of my recent work, as well as photos from the workshops and classes I teach.  Hope you enjoy it, and you can always find more of my photos at my homepage here.

Greg & Harin

Well, crikey. I’m back in Japan from a short trip down-under, where I was lucky enough to get a little r&r and escape the enormous sweat gland that is Tokyo right now.  But just so you know that it wasn’t all just fun and games, I managed to sneak in a wedding job as well...

A bit of fun

I’ve been asked on several occasions to provide more than just photography – sometimes people ask for a bit extra. Like this movie poster I shot for my best friend’s wedding a long time ago – ‘The Last Ninja’, a bit of a satirical homage to the old Sho Kosugi ninja films. Quite possibly still...

Kinfolk

I’m a sucker. Buy me dinner and I’ll take your photos.  That’s what my good friend Chris Nixon did in order to get his shots done with his new Kinfolk bicycle. Kinfolk is best described as a bicycle atelier out in Nakameguro.  Each bike frame is built to order and hand-made by 70-year old master...

Photography Tip #1504 – Get drunk first

It’s incredibly important not to take this caper too seriously – sometimes it’s useful just to have a few drinks to loosen up and have a bit of fun.   All shots below were made with a D700, 24-70mm f/2.8, a bit of flash and a bottle of Remy Martin.  You can see the dangers...

The Importance of Having Watt-Seconds

One of my biggest concerns with my speedlighting kit is whether I’ll have enough flash power to make a dent in broad daylight. Of course, using large lights is always an option but not always feasible unless you have a gimp to carry around several battery packs and heads. So when Alfie suggested we do...

Tomfoolery

Sheer idiocy. This is from another workshop – I decided to break out the coloured gels for students to play with, which was fun for all.  This is Hunter – not the actual model for the day but just a stand-in to test lighting while the real model Haruka changed outfit.  He’s a funny old...

Risa & Davey

Well, one of the reasons I went to LA was to attend a wedding of a good friend of the Lady’s.  Technically I was a guest but I guess I’m too inured in the habit of working at wedding ceremonies so I ended up taking shots until my batteries ran out. Some shots from that...

Skating in the park

I live near Komazawa Park, a great, expansive mother of a place with a sportsman’s wet dream worth of sporting facilities and stadiums.  It’s a great place to hang out, and I spent one sunny afternoon hanging out with a good mate of mine and avid skater Chris Nixon, who is a great patron of...

Debra

Often in my line of work I get to work with some very talented people – one of which is the delightful Yuko Cullen, who just happens to be married to a mate of mine. She’s a talented makeup artist who has won a whole bunch of accolades internationally as well as at home, as...
