Editorial, Wedding and Commercial Tokyo Photographer – Irwin Wong bio picture

Irwin Wong - Photographer

Welcome to my blog.

If you don't already know me, my name is Irwin Wong, and I'm an editorial photographer based in Tokyo, Japan.  I'm also affiliated with Japanorama.co.uk - the fastest growing source English-language source for learning photography in Tokyo - where I teach a series of lighting workshops.

This blog showcases some of my recent work, as well as photos from the workshops and classes I teach.  Hope you enjoy it, and you can always find more of my photos at my homepage here.

Pimp my CEO

Last week had to shoot some portraits of MTV Japan’s newest CEO. This man will be at the forefront of bringing out such shows like Pimp My Shinkansen, Tokyo’s Best Kabuki Crew, Takeshi and Butt-head, The Roppongi Hills, and so on.  (Hah, The Roppongi Hills, good one Irwin). Sometimes I think I need a better...

Men with big sticks

I’ve always wondered about how well a golf club would serve you in a zombie attack. It doesn’t seem very sturdy, and you’d really have to connect with the club to do any damage, and it seems rather difficult to wield. This is about as far as my interest in the sport of golf extends....

Prepare for salaryman-inspired glory!

Bought an iPad recently. Got it in australia without realizing that Japan has a rather insular policy regarding the distribution of SIM cards. So after a bit of back-and-forth buggery with several of Softbank’s smug staff, I had to resort to slightly illicit means to get my iPad hooked up to 3G and functioning at...

Greg & Harin

Well, crikey. I’m back in Japan from a short trip down-under, where I was lucky enough to get a little r&r and escape the enormous sweat gland that is Tokyo right now.  But just so you know that it wasn’t all just fun and games, I managed to sneak in a wedding job as well...

A bit of fun

I’ve been asked on several occasions to provide more than just photography – sometimes people ask for a bit extra. Like this movie poster I shot for my best friend’s wedding a long time ago – ‘The Last Ninja’, a bit of a satirical homage to the old Sho Kosugi ninja films. Quite possibly still...

Learning photography the fun way

I love running workshops with Japanorama – not only do you get to learn stuff along with the students but it’s also good to get together and be creative, without having clients breathing down your neck.  Such as the case with Ella here, in Tokyo at the Mejirodai Studio.  These shots aren’t edited at all...

Yoyogi Boxing Gym

Here’s another batch of photos shot at a recent Japanorama strobist workshop I held in Yoyogi, Tokyo.  The great thing about teaching photography in Tokyo is that you are always surprised at who will become willing subjects for your students – this time it was Japanorama student Rob Piazza who introduced this boxing gym to...

Fred Harris

Fred Harris – artiste extraordinaire, humanitarian and philanthropist. This is as shot, no alterations in post except a little sharpening for web.  Forgive the negative space at the top – the magazine’s title is likely to go there so I decided to leave it in.  Strobe freaks: check out the video I did here for...

Kinfolk

I’m a sucker. Buy me dinner and I’ll take your photos.  That’s what my good friend Chris Nixon did in order to get his shots done with his new Kinfolk bicycle. Kinfolk is best described as a bicycle atelier out in Nakameguro.  Each bike frame is built to order and hand-made by 70-year old master...

Photography Tip #1504 – Get drunk first

It’s incredibly important not to take this caper too seriously – sometimes it’s useful just to have a few drinks to loosen up and have a bit of fun.   All shots below were made with a D700, 24-70mm f/2.8, a bit of flash and a bottle of Remy Martin.  You can see the dangers...
