Editorial, Wedding and Commercial Tokyo Photographer – Irwin Wong bio picture

Irwin Wong - Photographer

Welcome to my blog.

If you don't already know me, my name is Irwin Wong, and I'm an editorial photographer based in Tokyo, Japan.  I'm also affiliated with Japanorama.co.uk - the fastest growing source English-language source for learning photography in Tokyo - where I teach a series of lighting workshops.

This blog showcases some of my recent work, as well as photos from the workshops and classes I teach.  Hope you enjoy it, and you can always find more of my photos at my homepage here.

Summer shootin’, had me a blaaast…

This post is a bit late in coming, but oh well. Took me, Alfie Goodrich, two hot models and a bunch of Japanorama students down to Onjuku beach for some interesting beach workshop shenanigans last month. Onjuku beach is about two and a half hours from Tokyo by car and is probably the only beach...

Greg & Harin

Well, crikey. I’m back in Japan from a short trip down-under, where I was lucky enough to get a little r&r and escape the enormous sweat gland that is Tokyo right now.  But just so you know that it wasn’t all just fun and games, I managed to sneak in a wedding job as well...

Aomori, Part 2

Part 2 of my Aomori series, this time with a focus more on the surrounding countryside. Once again, these were shot straight to JPEG (JPEG and RAW in camera) on my Nikon D700 at ISO6400, with my 24-70mm G.  Little to no editing in post-processing. 6400 ISO gives an absolutely great grainy feel and the...

Yoyogi Boxing Gym

Here’s another batch of photos shot at a recent Japanorama strobist workshop I held in Yoyogi, Tokyo.  The great thing about teaching photography in Tokyo is that you are always surprised at who will become willing subjects for your students – this time it was Japanorama student Rob Piazza who introduced this boxing gym to...

How many looks can you get with 1 light grey backdrop?

The answer to that question? I have no idea. Here’s the situation – huge studio in Elizabeth Schwarzkopf’s Tokyo salon (they make hair products, for anyone unfamiliar, like me).  I’m shooting maybe 30 models in 4 hours – at least I’m supposed to be. Anyway there was no white backdrop in the studio. Huge studio...

Red Erupting Cones

Don’t throw all of your photos away. Keep some of them. While undertaking a massive cull of my entire back catalog to save some disk space I couldn’t believe how many little gems like these I had tucked away in the dark cellars of my archives. Now the forgotten political prisoners of my tyrannical incumbency...

Haruka

Finally gotten around to editing the photos from a workshop late last year. Haruka is 16 – this came as a shock to me because I swear she had told me previously that she was nineteen – but anyway we had to work with the posing a bit to get something that I was happy...

A bit of Meiji

Just a couple of shots from the last day of Hatsumoude at Meiji Jingu.  Hatsumoude, for the uninitiated, is the first visit to a shrine for the new year, where good wishes for the year are made and protective charms are bought.  Meiji Jingu is often the most crowded one in Tokyo. Just happened to...

Make your own window light

It’s easy.  What is window light?  Light, coming through a window one would think.  Stick your flash outside a window, and what do you have?  Voila! Light coming through a window. Window light. Gel it orange for a bit of mood and you have instant sunset, even if your ground floor pottery studio is surrounded...

Noh Masks

Hey guys,  first up, happy new year!!  Time to get right back into the swing of things  after a long couple of days of extreme indolence and food.  First up for the year – a photo from last year.  Here’s another one from the Noh mask shoot with Akiko.  Might do an exhibition of that...
